THE HISTORY OF BILTONG
Biltong originated from South African countries such as Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The indigenous people from South Africa would preserve meat by slicing it into strips, curing it and then hanging it up to dry. This method was learnt from Dutch Settlers, who would use salt and vinegar to cure meat and then hang strips over tree branches to dry in the sun. After a couple of days, the Biltong would be perfectly preserved and ready to eat straight away or could be used on their journey and would last for months.
Biltong is extremely high in protein and low in carbohydrates, which makes it perfect for a variety of diet and healthy lifestyles. It is also an exceptionally rich source of iron and has a good content of nutrition. Red meat is an essential part of the human diet and it’s an incredibly efficient source of important amino-acids and vitamins.

COMPARISONS
Biltong and Jerky- what’s the difference?
Biltong is always a red meat – beef, venison or ostrich – whereas Jerky can sometimes be mince or chicken and sometimes vegetables. Beast Biltong is made from a beef steak taken from the silverside. But the biggest difference is in the cooking, or drying process in the case of Biltong.
Biltong is marinated in a vinegar and spices mix and then air dried for about a week. Jerky is cooked on a rack and smoked making for a drier taste. The smoking process can also create issues by adding chemical contaminants to the meat.
We are not trying to make a case either way, other than, our advice is to make sure you are snacking on a product made from natural ingredients with no additives. Biltong gives you a bigger hit of protein for the same weight consumed, and has very low carbs and saturated fat contents. Your choice – but we chose Beast Biltong.
